The Book Plate Art Project is coming to the City of Gold Coast Libraries in September 2025. Artists with a connection to the Gold Coast area are commissioned by the Project to create a series of small artworks responding to books or stories. These “book plates” are placed inside library books for readers to discover and keep.
The commissioned artists for the Book Plate Art Project – Gold Coast are Robyn Sweaney, Hiromi Tango, Norton Fredericks, Trent Mitchell, Beth Thompson, and Ju Ferreira. These artists will be joined by the creative community to make small artworks for readers to find and keep in library books.
This project is supported by an Arts Development Fund.
The Arts Development Fund is a City of Gold Coast Council fund that supports the Gold Coast’s creative community by fostering professional pathways and skills development, contributing to our city’s vibrant lifestyle
Hiromi Tango, Kindness Garden Petal Cards
2025 for the Book Plate Art Project, Gold Coast.
In Hiromi Tango’s work, Kindness Garden Gentle Petal Cards, the artist reflects on her childhood shaped by anxiety and finding solace in the quiet, nurturing presence of her grandmother’s garden. Influenced by the Japanese concepts of hanakotoba (the language of flowers) and omotenashi (mindful hospitality), Tango explores alternative ways of communication—beyond words and even beyond visual cues—using touch, sound, and participatory art to create inclusive, calming spaces. Her work emphasises emotional connection, sensory experience, and collective acts of kindness, inviting viewers to consider how we can each contribute to a more compassionate world, especially for those who may experience it differently.
